Material and process are the two legs of molded pulp. Four Decision Dimensions: Should You Choose Wet-Press or Dry-Press?

Dimension 1: Is the product "seen" or "thrown away"?

This is the fastest decision rule.

Wet-press: the packaging is part of the product experience. Consumers see it, touch it, and feel the brand's care when unboxing. Examples include the molded pulp inner tray of an iPhone, the bottle insert in a premium whisky box, and the inset tray in a skincare gift box.

Dry-press: the packaging's only mission is to protect the product until it arrives safely, then be thrown away immediately. Examples include egg trays, wine shipping dividers, and transport cushions for industrial parts.

One-sentence rule: if the packaging appears in an unboxing video → wet-press. If the packaging ends up in the trash → dry-press.

Dimension 2: How much dimensional precision do you need?

If your product needs to "snap in without wobbling" — phone cases, Bluetooth earbuds, precision medical devices — wet-press is a must. ±0.2mm precision means the product sits in the molded pulp tray with a gap no larger than the thickness of a business card.

Dry-press's ±0.8mm precision is perfectly adequate for protective packaging (eggs don't need 0.2mm precision), but for packaging that needs to "present" — 0.8mm of wobble is visible to the naked eye.

Dimension 3: What is your order volume?

This is the most practical dimension. Wet-press tooling is expensive but its MOQ is relatively low — suited to small-to-medium batches of high-value products. Dry-press tooling is cheap but its MOQ is high — suited to high-volume, low-unit-price products.

If your annual demand is within 5,000 pieces — wet-press is the only sensible choice, because a dry-press factory simply will not take a 5,000-piece order.

If your annual demand exceeds 100,000 pieces — multiply the unit-price difference between wet-press and dry-press by 100,000, and you may find the dry-press option saves $10,000-30,000 per year.

Dimension 4: How much do you rely on the "sustainability narrative"?

Although wet-press and dry-press have no essential difference in degradation (both industrial-compost in 60–90 days), consumer perception is completely different.

The smooth surface, uniform color, and deep-relief brand logo of wet-press products send the visual signal that "this is a premium brand that takes sustainability seriously." The rough texture of dry-press products signals "this is a cost-saving, practical choice."

Wet-press molds are expensive — but they last longer. If your product lifecycle is long (the same packaging used for 3–5 years), the total cost of ownership of a wet-press mold may be lower than dry-press, because dry-press molds, though cheap, are replaced frequently.

A: Consider "stock molds" — the factory already has existing molds you can produce with directly; the only limitation is fixed dimensions with no customization. Stock-mold orders can go as low as 500–1,000 pieces; unit cost is slightly higher than custom tooling, but you save the mold fee.

A: It's negotiable.
